Ansley-Marie as the Youth Honoree
When her mystery illness proved to be juvenile arthritis, Ansley-Marie battled back—and is now seizing the opportunity to raise awareness.
Ansley-Marie was an extremely active 6-year-old—involved in softball, ballet and jazz dance. When her parents started noticing her inability to stay awake and immense swelling on her knee, they started searching for answers.
Following X-rays, they came to our orthopedics team at Hamilton Creek for blood work and an MRI. That was the first time they heard the words, “juvenile arthritis.” Before they even made it back home to Winder, Ansley-Marie’s doctor called and told them to go straight to Scottish Rite.
After ruling out a joint infection, our Emergency Department referred them to Dr. Prahalad, our Chief of Rheumatology. He immediately created a care plan for Ansley-Marie that included a steroid injection and a medication to prevent her immune system from attacking her joints and within weeks, they noticed a huge difference in her overall health.
Despite the many challenges that come with the pain, stiffness and discomfort caused by her arthritis, Ansley-Marie is back doing the things she loves. She made the all-star cheerleading competition team last fall and is doing gymnastics every week.
Ansley-Marie has also become a champion for the Arthritis Foundation. This month, in honor of #ArthritisAwarenessMonth, the now 8-year-old served as the Youth Honoree for the annual Walk to Cure Arthritis. She was joined by the doctor who made that possible, Dr. Prahalad.
